Christ the King Church Choir, Kampala

Historical Background

Christ the King Church Choir, Kampala has been in service of Christ the King Parish since 1936. The choir comprised, at that time, mainly the Goan community with only four Ugandan members.

In 1961, a good number of choir members left the country leaving the four Ugandans to take up the task of re-building the Choir.  Among those were the late Mr. Valerian Mayega who served as Music Director and Chief Organist until his death in 1991, and Owek. A. D. Lubowa who retired from active choir service in the 1990’s. (Owek.lubowa passed on in 2017. May his soul rest in eternal peace)

From 1991 Mr. Patrick Mberenge took over as Music Director until 2007 when he handed over to Mr. Louis Sekyewa from whom our current Music Director, Mr. Dominic Mugesera took over in 2016. Mr Mberenge still serves the choir with vibrancy as the Music Technical Advisor of the Choir while Mr. Sekyewa currently works and lives outside Uganda.

It is gratifying to note that since its inception up to this day, the choir has been in attendance and singing during the 10.00 O’clock Mass at Christ the King Church, every Sunday.

Membership of the Choir

The Choir has enjoyed steady growth in its membership, which for quite some time now has grown to 70 active members, men and women from different walks of life who have offered their service and voices to God and the Church on purely voluntary basis.

One of the remarkable points to note is that some of our members who joined in the 1970’s and 80’s are still actively serving.  There are also a good number of those who joined in the 90’s and in the early 2000’s.  Such members are an example to the younger members and their continued service has helped to cement further the firm foundation started in 1936.

Sustainability through appreciation

The choir has continued to attract public admiration and appreciation for its services.  One of the areas for the choir’s sustainability has been through contributions that it receives through the kind appreciation and support by friends and well-wishers. These contributions and support have helped greatly in the everyday running of the Choir and have greatly assisted the Choir to continue serving.

Lastly, the choir has a Chairperson who serves a two year term and Mr. Felix R. Nsiimoomwe is the current Chairperson, and some of the past chairpersons are Mrs. Mildred W. Ssentoogo, Mr. Simon Yiga, and Mrs. Agnes Ssenkubuge (and others). The Choir’s Patron is the Parish Priest of Christ the King Parish.
